Medicare Eligibility

People 65 and Older

The largest group of people eligible for Medicare are those 65 and older. There are still specific qualifications to meet. To qualify as a part of this group:

They must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents who have lived in the U.S. for at least five years

They or their spouse must have worked to earn 40 credits – usually at least ten years – during which they paid Medicare taxes

If they meet the above conditions, people automatically qualify for Medicare.

People with End Stage Renal Disease

If someone is younger than 65 and has End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), they are eligible for Medicare. Just like people 65 and up, people with ESRD have specific criteria to fulfill to qualify for Medicare. Specifically:

They must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents who have lived in the U.S. for at least five years

They must have permanent kidney failure requiring regular dialysis or a kidney transplant

People with Disabilities

The last group of people eligible for Medicare is younger people with disabilities. People with disabilities must have been entitled to Social Security benefits for at least 24 months. For this group to be considered eligible for Medicare:

They must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents who have lived in the U.S. for at least five years

They must have been entitled to Social Security Benefits for at least 24 months (not necessarily consecutively)

They receive a disability pension from the Railroad Retirement Board and meet certain conditions

Or they have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Lou Gehrig’s disease
