Managed Long-Term Care

Managed Long-Term Care (MLTC) consists of various services for those who require daily accommodations due to aging, disability, or serious illness. MLTC insurance coverage is similar to traditional health insurance, except it has coverage features explicitly designed for those with a particular set of needs.

What Is Managed Long-Term Care?

MLTC covers a wide range of services and offers coverage in multiple environments. MLTC can take place in settings such as:

  • Adult daycare centers
  • Private residences
  • Nursing homes

With MLTC, you are supervised by professionals who help you accomplish everyday tasks. This is meant to make life easier when you cannot do such activities as eat, bathe, dress, or go from one room to another independently.

Who Needs MLTC Coverage?

MLTC isn’t limited to any one of a particular age group, illness, or disability type. If you cannot perform routine daily activities by yourself and cannot survive without assistance from a healthcare professional on an everyday basis, you need MLTC.

How Does MLTC Coverage Work?

MLTC Coverage applies to:

  • Meals delivered to one’s home
  • Medical equipment such as walkers, modifications to the home, eyeglasses, and hearing aids
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Dental, vision, and hearing services
  • Speech therapy
  • Non-emergency transportation to medical appointments

Will This Affect My Medicare Coverage?

Enrolling in MLTC coverage will not cause any problems with your Medicare coverage. This also goes for Medicare Advantage and Part D. Your MLTC coverage will coordinate with your Medicare plan.

When you get a treatment or service that your MLTC coverage and Medicare plan provide coverage for, your Medicare plan will be the primary payer, meaning it pays first. Your MLTC coverage will be the secondary payer, which means that your MLTC coverage will kick in after your Medicare policy has covered the expenses up to the plan’s limits.

Is MLTC Coverage Mandatory?

This coverage is mandatory for certain individuals. You must have MLTC coverage if all of the following apply to you:

  • You’re at least 21 years of age
  • You are a New York resident
  • You’re eligible for Medicare and Medicaid
  • You require long-term care services for more than 120 consecutive days
